As the latest outdoor living design trends show, our attitudes towards our backyards are changing.

In the past, a set of plastic chairs and a table may have been acceptable. But today we want more out of our outdoor living spaces. We want to add character, style, and our personal touch to every corner of our backyard. We want fun and relaxation footsteps away from the comforts of home.

We want to bring the indoors to our outdoors. It’s no surprise, then, that this sits in the top spot of our outdoor living design trends:

1. Seamless Indoor to Outdoor Transitions

Large windows and patio doors won’t be enough this year. Expect to see an increase in fully folding screens and walls separating the great outdoors from the inside of your home. This same technology can transform your indoor kitchen into a fully functioning outdoor kitchen in mere moments.

There will continue to be a trend in creating comfortable trendy outdoor furniture that mimics the appearance and texture of indoor sofas, tables and chairs. Teak will be a leading choice, though also be on the lookout for furniture which incorporates a variety of materials such as rope and powder-coated metal.

2. Pops Of Color

“Greige” is a safe choice, but 2019 is all about adding daring and exciting hues to your outdoor living spaces (think lime and rose tones).

Pantone’s color of the year is “Living Coral,” which is sure to cheer up any backyard. If you’re not a fan of coral, look around your existing outdoor living space and choose colors that will draw from the area like midnight blue, emerald green, and pink lavender.

3. Traditional Water Features

When it comes to outdoor living design trends, water features almost always make the list. While fun and whimsical features were popular in the past, there will be a growing demand for more formal and traditional features this year.

Water fountains, water walls, and scuppers will all be a top choice. Don’t be surprised to see some of these with a more modern twist, however, such as acrylic walls and color-changing LED lighting.

4. Modular Deck Designs

Sleek, clean lines are in for 2019 and freeform patios are on the way out. For the past few years there has been a steady request for decks to be built using larger linear pavers such as slab pavers and plank-style pavers.

Straight-forward deck designs will always be a popular choice. But you can expect to see more “entangled” hardscape installations which create a “faded” or stepping stone hardscape effect.

5. Built-In Lighting Systems

Because many of us spend the majority of our time outdoors in the evenings and on the weekends, we’re wanting more from our outdoor lighting than a single porch light.

New and existing pools will be outfitted with exciting new LED lighting.  New backyards will be constructed using automated lighting systems which can be controlled through smartphone apps. Retrofitting this type of lighting is a costly endeavor, however, so durable string light options (like the popular Edison-style bulbs) will continue to be a leader when it comes to outdoor living design trends.
