If you’re looking for ways to burn fat this summer, your pool might just be the place to go. Due to natural water resistance, swimming and other water aerobics make for great ways to shed the calories while keeping cool. The following three exercises from Texas Pools and Patios, your Austin pool builders, are a good place to start for anyone looking to use their pool to jumpstart an easy and effective full body cardio routine.

Swim Laps

Swimming laps is probably the single best way to burn fat in the pool. Just pick a side and go from one end to the other and back again. Repeat until the workout is finished. If you get bored, switch up the strokes you use to target different muscle groups and challenge yourself even more. The most common stroke variations include freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke and butterfly. We recommend 30 minutes of swimming at least three times a week. When swimming, you’ll want to break your laps up with rest periods not to exceed 30 seconds. If you want to feel the burn, this is the way.

Make Waves

You’ll want to be in about chest-deep water for this routine. Move to the wall and put one hand on the edge of the pool and the other hand on the wall just below the water with your fingers pointed down. Extend your legs out behind you while only keeping your head above water. Move up and down like a snake or a dolphin, starting from the abdominal core down to the legs and feet. You’ll want to kick hard until you’re producing waves in the water. Do this for about 30 seconds, rest for no more than 15 seconds, then repeat. Do this a minimum of three times.

Otter Rolls

This one might be a little tougher, and it requires a beach ball, but it is sure to work your core muscles and burn fat. Start by floating on your back on the surface of the water. Keep your legs together and make a straight line, holding the beach ball to your chest. Pick a shoulder and drive that side into the water, submerging the beach ball under your chest. Roll over the ball to complete the spin until you’re back in your starting position. You should be using your abs, shoulders and legs. Once you’ve made one rotation, take a breath and complete the rotation over the opposite shoulder. You’ll want to keep this going for about 30 seconds, take a rest period of no longer than 15 seconds, then repeat. This should be done three times.

Make It a Habit

These exercises, especially swimming laps, are meant to be performed, like most cardio routines, a minimum of three times a week for about 20 to 30 minutes. Maintaining this schedule is sure to start burning the fat off you at a feverish pace. Just remember that burning fat in particular regions of the body can be difficult, and instead it’s better to hit the whole body when doing cardio.
