Austin Summer Outdoor Kitchen Layout Ideas

Outdoor Kitchen Layouts, Texas Pools and Patios

Outdoor kitchens are wonderful additions to your Austin backyard. They are functional and entertaining. If you are thinking about adding one, it is important to plan the layout carefully.  Indoor and outdoor kitchens follow similar layouts for the most part. You want to design a space that fits your needs and yard. The layout you end up choosing will largely depend on space, budget, and function.

When deciding on your layout, you will want to keep different necessary zones in mind:

  1. Prep: this area will allow you to assemble, season, chop, and prep your foods
  2. Cooking: for outdoor kitchens, this is typically where you have your grill
  3. Serving/Entertaining: this area allows for eating foods and making beverages
  4. Cleaning: not all outdoor kitchens have a sink, but it is a great additional if space and budget allow for it

L-Shaped Kitchens

This layout usually separates cooking/prepping into one section and entertaining on the other section. This is a great mid-level kitchen. It allows for extra space, but doesn’t require an extremely high budget. Due to the shape, there is flexibility in positioning L-shaped kitchens in your yard.

U-Shaped Kitchens

This layout is typically your largest outdoor kitchen plan. There are several options when separating your zones. A popular layout choice is to have prep and cleaning zones on one leg, cooking in the middle, and then serving and entertaining zones on the last leg.  This type of kitchen requires a larger budget and more space; however you will end up with a fantastic kitchen area.

Kitchen Island/Stand-alone

The most economical option is a stand-alone kitchen. This usually consists of the grill with an extension to prep and possibly serve food. Not all stand-alone kitchens have serving and cleaning areas. This is a great plan if space and/or budget is limited.

5 Design Elements for Creating Laguna Pools

lagoon pool, texas pool and patios

Lagoon, or laguna, style pools are beautiful additions to a backyard. They are an ideal way for creating your own oasis. Laguna pools should be made to seem natural. There are several design elements you can utilize to achieve a stunning laguna style pool.

Shape

Laguna style pools are freeform pools, but often have more dramatic curves to their shape. The shape should be both natural and organic to achieve that true lagoon feel.  Imagine the shape of a lagoon you would see on an island. This is the type of shape to replicate.

Rock Features

To continue with natural elements, rock features are excellent additions. Large bolder rocks can be placed on the inlets of the freeform shape, as well as scattered on the surrounding edges. Rock walls and grottos can be built right onto the wall. These are great additions for giving a natural feel. Complement rocks with natural fauna such as ferns and palms.

Waterfalls

Imagine the relaxing sound of natural falling water. Waterfalls are a great addition to keep up the natural oasis of your lagoon pool. These can be built with the natural rock features and grottos for further enhancement. Waterfalls are an excellent backdrop to your pool. The addition of a waterfall gives your pool a sense of luxury while being consistent with the theme.

Color

Color can have a dramatic effect on the feel of your pool. By choosing deeper colors such as dark blues and greens, the pool can appear more organic and natural. Pool lightening can further enhance color. By simply changing the shade, the pool’s ambiance can transform. For example, strategic planning can make the pool appear as a natural body of water under the moonlit sky.

Beach Entry

Rather than having not-so-natural steps into the pool, a beach entry can give that last added touch of nature. A beach entry is a shallow slope into the pool to replace those top steps. It is as if you are walking right into the ocean. Beach entries are great for relaxing on to get a tan and are easily accessible entrances for those that may have difficulty with steps.

Easy Cloudy Pool Solutions for Austin & San Antonio

Easy Cloudy Pool Solutions for Austin and San Antonio | Texas Pools & PatiosWhen your pool water becomes cloudy, it can be extremely uninviting- something no pool owner wants, especially around this time of year. There are roughly two reasons why your pool water might not be looking like its usual, sparkling self; the reason is either chemical or mechanical.

However, pool owners can often clear a cloudy pool fast on their own before it’s necessary to call in a pool maintenance professional. Take a look at these solutions for clearing up a cloudy pool:

Mechanical Problem

If pool chemicals in the water are at the right level and/or pool water has been treated regularly, then the problem could be a mechanical issue. Mechanical parts that contribute to fuzzy water are a bad pump, insufficient circulation, poor filtration, and improper maintenance.

Your pool should be filtering water at a minimum of 8-10 hours a day. If your pool water is murky, try increasing the amount of time for filtration. Make sure to clean your filter regularly to avoid bacterial build up.

For proper cleaning, it might be time to invest in a quality vacuum or an auto pool cleaner that regularly helps with water clarity.

If a pump is defective or is too big or small for your pool, it may not be catching the debris like it should be. Pumps that are too big for pools will force debris right through its filter. Additionally, you may want to check for blockages that may affect the effectiveness of your pump.

Chemical Problem

If your pump is working properly and there seems not be any apparent blockages or defectiveness in your pump, the cause of a cloudy pool might be chemical. While this could be a main cause for your cloudy pool, it’s important to investigate any possible mechanical problems before adjusting your pool’s water chemistry.

Chemical causes of cloudy pools include:

  • Improper maintenance of sanitation levels
  • Lack of chemical maintenance routine
  • Poor pool shocking

You may have improper pool chemistry levels if they do not test in these ranges:

  • Free chlorine: (1to 3 ppm)
  • pH (7.2 to 7.6)
  • Alkalinity (90 to 120 ppm)
  • Calcium Hardness (200 to 350 ppm)
  • If pH is too high: Use a pH decreaser/reducer
  • If total alkalinity is too high: Use a pH decreaser/reducer
  • If calcium hardness is too high: You may need to replace some of the pool water and switch to a chlorine with a lower quantity of calcium.

Keep Up Regular Maintenance

Careful, consistent maintenance will prevent cloudy pool water. The best way is to regularly check pumps and your pool’s chemical levels, making sure to shock it on a routine basis with the right amount of chlorine for your pool.

If you are still having issues with cloudy pool water or don’t have the time to tend to it yourself, contact the pool maintenance professionals at Texas Pools & Patios. We can set up a one time service visit or create a plan for ongoing service to keep your pool water sparkling all season long.

Texas Pool Maintenance Tips: Crystal Clear Pools in 3 Easy Steps!

Many people don’t invest in a pool because it requires high levels of maintenance. In reality, though, you can design a pool made with materials that are simple to clean. In fact, you can have crystal clear pools in a mere three steps. Owning a pool has never been easier.

Step One: Clear the Debris

The first step is to clean the gunk from your swimming pool water. If you practice regular maintenance or have an efficient filter, this should not take a long time. Use your leaf rake to skim the water and remove any leaves, dirt, and bugs. Once this is gone, you want to clean your pumps installed so that these continue to function properly. If your filter is not running at the correct level, you will need to clean this as well.

Crystal Texas Pool Maintenance: Clear Pools in 3 Easy Steps! | Texas Pools and Patios Austin San AntonioStep Two: Adjust the pH

Your pool may be dirty due to the Ph balance being off. There is either salt or chlorine in pools and if the levels are not balanced correctly, it can affect the water quality. You need to acquire a chemical test for your pool that reads the levels of your pH and alkalinity. Phosphate levels may also need to be tested, though a professional should do this. Once you know your pool’s current chemical readings, you can add the right mixture of chemicals so that it is balanced.

Step Three: Remove Algae

If you have green pool water, there is too much algae in your water. When there are algae, you may notice a green or black build-up on the walls as well. The only way to kill algae is to get rid of their food source by shocking your pool with chlorine. In order to kill it, your chlorine levels need to be ten times as high as normal for a minimum of 24 hours. This equates to 1-2 pounds of chlorine per 10,000 gallons of water. The pool will need to run the entire time and as the water gets cloudy, the algae are dying.

If you practice pool maintenance on a regular basis like cleaning your filters and skimming the water, then this should be a painless process. You may find that it takes almost no time to clean your swimming pool water. In fact, you can even attain crystal clear pools in less than three steps if your pH is balanced or the water lacks algae.

Is it Time to Remodel Your Texas Backyard Pool?

Thinking that your pool may be ready for a do-over?  Here are some of the top reasons why homeowners take on pool remodeling projects, and the benefits they bring:

Is it Time to Remodel Your Texas Backyard Pool? Texas Pools and Patios Austin

When Safety Becomes an Issue

Cracked concrete, damaged fiberglass and chipped tile are all common safety issues that can potentially lead to a disastrous situation.  Not only can someone become physically injured by cracks in the pavement or broken steps and ladders, but such cracks or breaks in the foundation of your pool and the surrounding area can become a health issue (algae and other nasty bacteria can be harboured in such areas).

Benefit:  Not only will you be keeping you, your family and visitors safe, but you’ll also be protecting yourself from any potential lawsuits that could arise should someone become injured on your property!

When the Pool’s Just Ugly

Let’s face it, there are some really unattractive pools out there. Your backyard may be absolutely stunning, but that boring rectangular pool with damaged tile from 1989 is actually taking away from the appeal of your lovely patio, not adding to it.  Fortunately, the appearance of your pool can be easily updated and in ways that can fit any budget.

Benefit:  Adding a beautiful pool to your backyard not only increases your own enjoyment, but it can increase the value of your home as well.  If you’re planning on selling your home any time soon, having a fantastic looking backyard oasis can help to quickly move your property off the market.

When Energy Efficiency is Poor

Old pools lack a number of technological advancements and features that newer pools have.  Pumps, heaters, filtration systems, cleaning systems… all of these are far more efficient today than those from even as little as 10 years ago.

Benefit:  While you may not need to completely remodel your pool to take advantage of these features, it’s a good idea to begin trading in your own pumps and filters for more energy efficient ones to save both the environment and your money.

Top Outdoor Pool And Patio Living Trends For 2014

It may still be 2013, but it’s still a great time to start thinking about how you can update your outdoor living space for when the warmer weather hits.  If you’re hoping to revolutionize your outdoor living space for the spring and summer, here are some trends for 2014 to take into consideration:

Top Outdoor Pool And Patio Living Trends For 2014 Texas Pools and Patios Austin

Mix And Match Brights With Neutral Tones

Regardless of the furniture and furnishings that you choose to use in your outdoor living space, pairing neutral tones (particular blues and greens) with bright, bold colors is going to be all the rage this year, particularly when it comes to outdoor furniture and fabrics.

Raised Fire Pits And Fire Features

Bringing the indoors out is going to continue to be a hot trend in 2014, which is what is making fire pits all the more popular in 2014.  Expect to see a lot of raised fire pits in the upcoming year, with fire pits and other fire features being raised to “chat height” (i.e. just slightly higher than coffee table height).  Fire pit tables are especially becoming a hot item for most pool and patio owners, with many even doubling up as being a space for guests to cook their own food at.

Large And Accommodating Furniture Pieces

For the most part, when it comes to outdoor furniture, the bigger, the better.  Homeowners are looking for larger pieces to best accommodate their guests, such as longer tables that can seat up to 10 guests at once, and deep seated chairs and couches that promise maximum relaxation and comfort.

TIP:  Looking to update your outdoor furniture but don’t have the budget to replace it all?  Then consider having new fabrics put onto your existing furniture, or update the look with some on-trend throw outdoor throw cushions.
